What is Hemorrhoid and Causes of Hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoid or piles are swelling and inflammation of veins in the rectum and anus. Basically this is Cushions of tissue filled with blood vessels at the junction of the rectum and the anus.

Hemorrhoids that cause problems are found equally in men and women, and their prevalence peaks between 45 and 65 years of age. In women hemorrhoids are often associated with pregnancy. Hemorrhoids may lead to a condition called prolapsed hemorrhoids. This occurs when the internal hemorrhoids swell and then extend through the anus. You then can feel the hemorrhoids, at your anus, from the outside. You may develop itching in your anus from prolapsed hemorrhoids.

When a blood clot occurs in a hemorrhoid, the hemorrhoid will become even more swollen. This swelling leads to increased pain.

Causes of Hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids are due to many factors, including a diet that lacks fiber rich food, e.g. fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
It is said, hypertension can also cause this disease. Obesity can be a factor by increasing rectal vein pressure. Poor muscle tone or poor posture can result in too much pressure on the rectal veins.

Pregnancy may lead to hypertension and increase strain during bowel movements, so hemorrhoids are often associated with pregnancy.

Symptoms of Hemorrhoids

The symptoms often include bright red blood in stool. An internal hemorrhoid may protrude through the anus becoming irritated and painful, commonly known as protruding hemorrhoid.

External hemorrhoid may include painful swelling or a hard lump around the anus that results when a clot forms, often known as thrombosed external hemorrhoid.

Excessive straining, cleaning or rubbing results in further irritation, bleeding or itching in and around anus.

Itching, skin irritation, discomfort and pain during bowel movement is initial signs of piles or hemorrhoids. If health condition is deteriorating fast, then it often develops into more serious state, requiring surgery.

But in some cases, it goes away without causing much irritation. But the incidence of recurrence of hemorrhoids is more when it goes untreated after few months.
